MUSIC

Children playing Ukelele in Music - MSW Catholic School, Park Ridge, Illinois

The goal of the music program at Mary, Seat of Wisdom School is to entice students to be active listeners and performers both inside and outside of the classroom. At MSW, students learn music through the Orff Schulwerk method. Orff Schulwerk was started by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman in Germany during the 1920s as a way to help every child learn ‘through the integration of music, movement, speech and drama’.

In the classroom, integration happens by means of various age-appropriate activities. All students learn to perform on instruments together and alone using the correct technique, to read music using a system of notation appropriate for each age group, to speak using rhythm patterns and identifying patterns in phrases, to move to music appropriately in groups or individually, and to utilize technology in ways that can help with reading music, listening to music and learning to assess music correctly.

Through the integration of music, movement, speech, and drama and active student participation, the MSW Music program provides students the opportunity to build upon their learning each year.
